Temple of Karnak
The Temple of Karnak is a spectacular complex of temples, chapels, pylons, obelisks and sanctuaries dedicated to the Theban triad but also for the greater glory of pharaohs. It became one of the largest and most magnificent temple complexes in the ancient world. The Temple of Karnak was also the most important place of worship in Egypt during the New Kingdom. It is considered to be the most restored temple but meanwhile keeping its original structure. With its hypostyle hall and a beautiful forest of giant papyrus-shaped columns, this temple remains to be a must see when on holiday in Egypt.
Valley of the Kings
During the New Kingdom, most of Egypt’s Pharaohs were buried in tombs cut from rocks in the Valley of the Kings. It is located on the West Bank of the River Nile. The Valley of the Kings counts 62 tombs, including the burial chamber of the boy King Tutankhamun. The non-royal tombs belonged to various officials, royal family members and priests. Most of these tombs were cut in limestone following a similar pattern: 3 corridors, an antechamber and a sunken sarcophagus chamber. The decision to bury pharaohs within the Valley of the Kings instead of pyramids was intended to safeguard against tomb robbers.
Three of the tombs are daily open for public. However the tombs openings are rotated to protect the paintings from damage.
Hatshepsut Temple
Located on the western bank of the Nile, the Temple of Hatshepsut is one of the most beautiful of the royal mortuary temples. It was named after Queen Hatshepsut, the first known female monarch that ruled for about two decades over Egypt. Built into the towering cliff, it rises on three enormous terraces. These terraces are connected by ramps and each level is marked with a colonnade of stark, large unadorned square pillars. The cool stone interior features well-preserved wall reliefs and hieroglyphics, some still in brilliant colors.
Colossi of Memnon
The Colossi of Memnon are two great stone statues representing a seated King Amenhotep III. They were originally constructed as guardians for Amenothep III’s mortuary complex, which once stood behind them. The statues are about 18 meters high and weight around 700 tons each. A fierce earthquake in Luxor, centuries ago, caused severe damages to both statues.
